Modern Air was started by Derick Gunning in 1989 with a Piper Arrow IV (G-BONC) with the aim of providing a higher standard of aircraft than normally available for self-fly rental and pilot training.
The concept was successful and the fleet grew rapidly. Anna and Christine helped to establish Fowlmere Flying Club, a wholly owned subsidiary of Modern Air. PPL training commenced in 1991 and continued through to April 2002 with 84 students completing their PPL training at Fowlmere. Further training continues and many past students and new members go on to obtain their IMC, multi-engine and night ratings.
A number of our past students purchased aircraft which were added to our rental fleet and several of these remain to date.
Aircraft maintenance is taken care of by Kevin and Martin who maintain the fleet under our M3 approval for many years and they also have EASA approvals.
For several years the fleet has been exclusively Piper with models ranging from PA28-181 to PA34-220T but more recently a Cessna and Cirrus aircraft have been added to offer a wider range.
Our existing rental fleet (March 2018) includes three Archer III, one Saratoga, a Cessna 150 and a Cirrus SR20-G2. All are equipped for foreign trips and are fully documented.
The aircraft are charged a wet-rate for airborne times only and the fuel drawback is the rental pilot’s where applicable. (Note that the Cirrus is charged from engine start to shutdown.)
We can provide IMC; night ratings; proficiency tests for single and multi engine class ratings; IR renewals; check rides, safety pilot and aircrew services in your own or our aircraft.
Come and join us on one of our lunch trips or come and discuss your requirements and let us show you around our rental fleet over a coffee. Our planned trips include interesting locations around the UK and to France or Holland and are organised throughout the year.
We are usually available everyday from 9am to midday and at all other times by arrangement.
